Dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid — a sugar molecule the body produces naturally — in a firmer, cross-linked gel that is placed at precise depths to replace lost volume and gently support facial structure. It is the go-to treatment for flattening of the cheeks, thinning lips, a receding chin or a softening jawline.

The science
Why it works
Hyaluronic acid holds many times its own weight in water, so filler restores volume both by its own bulk and by drawing in moisture. Cross-linking the gel controls how firm it is and how long it lasts — from soft, spreadable products for lips and tear troughs to firmer gels that support the cheek and jaw. Because it is hyaluronic acid, it can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if an adjustment is ever needed.

Aftercare
Looking after your results
Do
- Apply a cold compress for the first 24–48 hours if swollen
- Sleep slightly elevated and on your back for the first few nights
- Drink plenty of water
- Use a gentle cleanser and daily SPF
Avoid
- Saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga or intense exercise for 48 hours
- Alcohol for 24–48 hours
- Aspirin, ibuprofen or vitamin E for 24–48 hours unless prescribed
- Make-up over injection points for 24 hours
- Firm pressure, facials or dental work for two weeks

How long do dermal fillers last?
Typically 6–18 months, depending on the area treated and the product used. Lips tend to be at the shorter end, structural areas like the cheek at the longer end.
Does it hurt?
There is minor discomfort. Most fillers contain local anaesthetic, and numbing cream is used where helpful.
Is there downtime?
Minimal. Expect some tenderness, and possibly redness, swelling or bruising, for two to three days.
Can filler be dissolved?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme, hyaluronidase, if an adjustment is ever needed.
Am I suitable?
Most healthy adults over 18 are. Filler isn't done during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or over an active skin infection. Your history is reviewed at consultation.
How is this different from Profhilo?
Filler adds structure and volume. Profhilo improves the quality of the skin itself — hydration and firmness — without changing shape. The two are often used together.
