Aqualyx is a solution based on deoxycholic acid — a compound the body uses to break down dietary fat. Injected into a specific pocket of fat, it disrupts the membrane of the fat cells there. The cells release their contents, which the body then clears naturally through the lymphatic system over the following weeks.

It is designed for small, defined, pinchable pockets of fat in people who are close to their target weight — the area under the chin most of all. It is not a weight-loss treatment and won't help with larger areas or with loose skin.

Each session is a grid of small injections into the target area and takes up to 45 minutes. Firm swelling afterwards is expected and is part of how the treatment works; it can last from several days to around two weeks.

Clinical protocol

How the treatment works

  • 01

    Consultation & suitability

An assessment of the area, your skin and your goals, and an honest view on whether the treatment is likely to give you the result you want.

  • 02

    Treatment

A grid of small injections into the target area, with numbing cream for comfort. Firm swelling afterwards is expected and part of how it works.

  • 03

    Course & review

The number of sessions depends on the area and the amount of local fat, reassessed at every visit for the best result — most areas need around two to three sessions, spaced three to four weeks apart.

The science

Why it works

Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that naturally helps emulsify fat during digestion. Concentrated and injected into subcutaneous fat, it is cytolytic — it breaks down the fat-cell membrane so the cell can no longer store fat. Macrophages then clear the debris and the released lipids are metabolised over several weeks. Once a fat cell is destroyed it does not return, so results are stable provided your weight stays stable.

  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first two nights after chin treatment
  • Drink at least two litres of water a day for the first week
  • Expect and allow for firm swelling — it is part of the process

Avoid

  • Massaging the area unless specifically advised
  • Other treatments in the same area for around two weeks
  • Judging the result until swelling from the final session has settled

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is Aqualyx?

A deoxycholic-acid-based solution injected into a specific pocket of fat to break down the fat cells there. The body then clears them naturally over several weeks.

How much does fat dissolving cost?

From £180 for a smaller area like the chin, up to £450 for a larger area such as the abdomen, plus a £40 consultation fee credited toward your treatment if you book within a week. See the full price list above for every area.

Is this a weight-loss treatment?

No. It treats small, defined, pinchable pockets of fat — most often under the chin — in people who are already close to their target weight.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the area and the amount of local fat — this is assessed at every session for the best result, though most areas need around two to three sessions, spaced three to four weeks apart.

What is the downtime?

Firm swelling, redness and tenderness are expected after each session and can last from several days to around two weeks. This is part of how the treatment works.

When will I see results?

Results build gradually over the weeks following each session, and the full effect is assessed once swelling from the final session has settled.

Are results permanent?

The fat cells that are broken down do not return. Results are stable as long as your weight stays stable.

Does it hurt?

There is some stinging and a warm sensation during and shortly after injection. Numbing cream is used, and most people tolerate it well.

Am I suitable?

You need a small, pinchable pocket of fat, reasonably firm skin and a stable weight near your target. Suitability is assessed in person at consultation.

Results vary by individual; suitability confirmed at consultation.
